On the June 2007 trip a cow was purchased
. . . . read their story . . .
“The cow came about because Dickens, the
teacher who is in charge of the Amani Rainbow Nursery School
and I were discussing the preparation and nutritional
content of the “uji” they make for the kids. Powdered
milk is one of the ingredients (along with maize and sugar)
but they were out of money and therefore out of powdered
milk when we were there. So we bought them some
powdered milk and it was really expensive. I guess
anything processed is costly. Then we discussed and bought
some fresh milk for them and the kids got about ¼ cup of
real milk one day. They loved it. So then Dickens
said that they could sure use a cow, which made good sense
to me. With the cow, they will have a good amount of
milk for the kids every day and they can sell the milk from
the afternoon milking for other foods or goods that you know
they desperately need. So I started collecting money from
the team for the cow and everyone was very generous and
interested in providing for the kids. It took a while
to actually purchase the cow but I guess lots of things are
involved. I pray she is a healthy cow who will have healthy
babies and produce tons of milk for Amani for years to
come.” Diane Kinny, 2007 Team Member
